The Setauket to Port Jefferson Station Greenway Newsletter
Volume 1, Issue 6
September 2021
The Trail Mix is the monthly newsletter of The Friends of the Greenway. We established this bulletin to keep the Friends and users of the Greenway current on some of the “goings- on” regarding our Trail and to dispense a mix of bits and bytes of flavorful information. Hopefully, The Trail Mix will help to enlighten, inform and entertain our readers. The Friends of the Greenway is a committee of our parent organization – The Three Village Community Trust

The Natural World, and more.
Deer, wild turkey, eagles, hawks – When you are on the Greenway, the natural world opens up!
Don’t hesitate to send your photos to us for an upcoming issue of The Trail Mix. And …we did get reports of a sighting of Barney, the Mastic bull, on the Greenway. These reports could not be confirmed.
August 14th Cleanup and Trail Steward Meet Up
The weather was perfect! The coffee was hot, and the bagels were delicious. The Trail Stewards had a ‘meet up’ an hour before the monthly cleanup, and had a fun time sharing stories about their walking, biking, and hiking experiences. But, when time came to start work on the Greenway – it was all hands on deck! We were able to trim back overhanging limbs, sweep-up, and eliminate some troublesome graffiti. Also – out famous ‘outside’ artist – who asks to remain anonymous – was able to start his painting on the large rock near the Lawrence Aviation site! Will it deter the marring of the rock by ‘taggers?’ – We’ll have to wait and see.

The monthly cleanups help to keep the trail ‘looking good!’
Trail Stewards Dave Wang, Bill Negre, and Charlie McAteer are part of the dedicated crew keeping the Greenway in tip-top shape!
Mowers! Start Your Engines!
We just received word that the NYS DOT will be mowing the trail starting the week of August 30th. Let’s hope so – we are always in need of some trail grooming – it’s a big job! We have trail stewards, and some trail users that pitch in to mow different sections, but the State crew and equipment really makes the difference during the Spring and Summer months. Kudos to the NYS DOT!
Wow, what a great idea!
Want to advertise your business or service, and at the same time help the Greenway?
With the wild popularity of The Trail Mix (or at least we’d like to think so), we have decided to give businesses and individuals an opportunity to advertise in our newsletter. At the end of The Trail Mix, we’ll post advertisements and personal messages for the whooping sum of $25 per issue. All proceeds will go to the care and maintenance of the Greenway – gloves, tools, trash bags, cleaning supplies, and other basic necessities for the Trail Stewards and volunteers.
Interested in advertising: Contact hjmones@gmail.com with your content, and the payment method and other details will be emailed back to you!
Get Ready to Ride
Thanks to Trail Steward Norman Samuels for sending the photo below. It shows the progress on the build-out of the North Shore Rails to Trails that runs from Port Jefferson Station to Wading River/Shoreham. This ten-mile bike and pedestrian pathway runs along an abandoned LIRR line. It looks like a ribbon cutting for the path opening could be very soon.
